My mother is very sick and physically disabled, and is going into surgery soon which will leave her wheelchair bound. My mother cannot work, and I stay at home with her while my brother makes money for bills. I am the first out of four children to be going to college. I was just thinking about the whole cause and effect aspect of Until Dawn because of this post, specifically how you’re not supposed to harm living things on the mountain. It’s a stretch, but the original prank basically lead to Beth’s death. You could argue that that’s why all the shit that happened the next year had to happen. 

Dr. Hill makes a point of saying he doesn’t “know which is worse, actively triggering events that lead to someone’s death… or passively allowing tragedy to occur.” No one physically pushed hannah or beth, but they did stand by and let it happen. We’ve seen that just being nearby is enough for the mountain to take its revenge. Sam doesn’t kill the squirrel in the beginning of the game, and yet if Chris does, Sam is the one that gets attacked by the crow for it. If Jess hits the bird with the snowball, It’s Mike that almost gets impaled by the icicle. It’s about nature remaining in balance, not necessarily the proper retribution.

With that in mind, it sort of makes sense that Sam and Chris, who had no real part in the prank the year before, are the ones put through the most mental torture in Josh’s prank. There’s a reoccurring theme of innocent people paying for the shitty actions of others.

yeah that makes sense because often times a passive bystander is no worse than the person doing it. though Chris wasn’t even awake it. Though Josh in some twisted way did some of that stuff to Chris as a way to get him with Ashley. it’s also strange because it seems that Sam and Chris were the closest to Josh as well.

I saw a really interesting post about how Josh torturing his 2 closest friends was more of a way of torturing himself. Watching them suffer was painful for him (or would be once he sobered up) so that was his subconscious way of punishing himself for not being able to save his sisters. I’ll edit this with a link if i can find that post again because it was good.

On the other hand, all of the Chris/Ashley pranks do seem to be about bringing them closer together through trauma (there’s even those foreshadowing lines Josh says about Chris needs a gun to his head or a traumatic event to bond over to get Chris and Ashley together.) Sam’s intended prank was pretty tame too. She was supposed to see the video and then get gassed/sleep through the rest of the night. In a twisted way, Josh might have thought he was being the kindest to Chris/Sam through his actions. I mentioned that I thought Josh had a lot more planned for the night than he actually got a chance to do. Chris/Ash/Sam might have gotten off easy compared to what Josh had planned for the other 4 kids.
