“mules don’t belong in the hunter/jumper ring”
Everyone laughed at B and Neenah when they entered the ring last weekend. Then they won every class the entered and the “I can’t believe my horse got beat my a mule” comments started.
We thought nothing of it, typical horse show conversations.
Then we got an e-mail this morning.
Neenah was “adorable” they “loved having her”, “she caused no problems” BUT SHE CAN’T COME BACK TO SHOW due to too many complaints from trainers.
So, Neenah’s hunter/jumper career ended as quickly as it began, B is heartbroken, Susie and I are livid…. a mule can go to the US Dressage finals or 3day eventing but can’t show at a local hunter/jumper show? We are researching ways to fight this decision and any recommendations would be really helpful.
Would trainers have complained if she hadn’t won?
This is so absolutely absurd and you should fight back.
The mule was good enough for the judge. The trainers and competitors don’t decide whose best, the judge decides, and the judge chose a mule. If that makes people mad, they need to go home and train harder, not take the right to participate in a fun local competition away from A CHILD.
This isn’t the olympics, this isn’t the A circuit, this is a fun competition FOR KIDS. Who are they punishing here? A child.
And not just any child, an awesome child – a young animal rights activist who raises money for charity and used her opportunity to have her own horse as a chance to rescue a starving pony and train the pony on her own. She COULD be zooming around the pony ring on a little welsh cross like everyone else, but she chose to adopt and train an unstarted pony – so she’s competing on a borrowed mule.
And she rides so well that the judge made her champion of multiple divisions on this mule.
Get it in the local paper, get it out there what kind of horsemanship this show series is really promoting, if this kid and her prizewinning mule aren’t allowed to show because of a few sore losers. This is absolutely absurd and it really pisses me off.
